Harris County Public Library was chosen to participate in The Big Read a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. Harris County Public Library is one of 72 locations in the United States and one of 2 in the State of Texas to participate in this program.
Realizing that a community wide reading program must involve the community, a committee of library systems, school districts and organizations from Harris, Montgomery, Fort Bend and Brazoria counties was formed to implement The Big Read program.
The Big Read provides citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their community. It is designed to revitalize the role of literature in the nation’s popular culture and to bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens. Through this initiative, the NEA is working with multiple partners across the country to encourage Americans to read for pleasure and enlightenment.
The NEA believes that a great nation deserves great art. The Big Read exemplifies the NEA’s commitment to help the arts become accessible to more Americans.
